Safety pins are commonly used to fasten pieces of fabric or clothing together. As a tool, the safety pin’s design has remained largely unchanged for millennia, while metal pins have always been an expensive item. In the 19th century, mechanization made safety pins easier to produce and really affordable. Safety pin made its way to popularity during the punk rock era of the 1970s, as a symbol of opposition. As an everyday object in our life the safety pin has a lot of different symbolic meanings; the pin is protecting unborn child from loss and diseases in Mexico, in the Philippines it is used to pin charms or amulets on a baby’s clothing to protect against the bad, or it is attached to the inside of children’s clothes to ward off evil spirits in Ukraine.
