Overview

The Creative Centre is a group-funded non-profit cooperative located in Stöðvarfjörður, a remote village in the East fjords of Iceland. It was established in 2011 when a group of people acquired the abandoned Fish Factory of the village.

The purpose of the multi-disciplinary program is to provide emerging and established artists, creatives, designers and progressive thinkers a port for free expression and a place to meet with other creative people in a small collaborative community. We offer our artists time and space to focus and introspect on their practice on their own terms, but no creative or output-based obligation placed on our participating artists. If an artist wants to lead a workshop, exhibit their works, hold a concert, or perform or read poetry, we are up for most things.

We offer a shared studio space (95 m2) for eight artists, and the Centre is being transformed into a platform offering many different workshops and facilities where small initiatives can thrive. Our facilities are well-equipped for most basic projects:

  • Wood Workshop (95 m²) • Woodturning Lathes, Table Saw, Chop Saw, Band Saw, Fret Saw, Pillar Drill, Thickness planer, Sanding Machines, Routers, Picture Framing Machines & full range of hand tools
  • Metal Workshop (57 m²) • Arc Welder, Metal Turning Lathe, Pillar Drill, Angle Grinders, Dremel & a wide range of hand tools
  • Printing Studio - Linoleum and Wood Print capabilities (under renovation but functional)
  • Ceramic Workshop (43 m²) • pottery wheel, a low-temperature firing kiln (1020 °C) and all sorts of hand sculpting tools, plus earth clay, under color, oxide and glazes for purchase
  • Concert Hall (115 m²) • sound system that comes with our sound engineer, Vinny
  • Studio Silo • professional five-room recording studio offering digital and analog recording, specializing in recording to tape like it used to be!

The duration of residencies in 2024 is between 1 and 6 months, with consecutive months possible. The Centre is closed in January, July and December and open the rest of the year.
