Overview

Recognised as Scotland’s biggest awards for portraiture, the Scottish Portrait Awards has quickly established itself as a barometer of contemporary Scottish art practice, giving visibility to a mix of well-established artists as well as newcomers.

The Scottish Portrait Award for Fine Art is for portraits in any 2D or 3D medium - all painting formats, all sculpture formats, collage, printmaking, weaving, or anything else - we are seeking diversity as well as powerful art and strong story-telling.

The concept of ‘portrait’ may be interpreted in the widest possible sense. The subject may involve one or more people and self-portraits are also permitted. Portraits may include animals if these are secondary to the human subject. Portraits that are more conceptual or contemporary in their approach are as welcome as more traditional portraiture. The only limits are on the size of the work!

Our fine art judging panel is chaired by multi award winning contemporary artist Gordon Mitchell, who is also Director of the SPAs. The panel includes Anna Robertson, McManus Gallery, award-winning artists Calum Stevenson and Helen Wilson, and Roger Billcliffe of the Roger Billcliffe Gallery in Glasgow.
