A recognition of an existence. Fredy lived in 'the apartment' since the 1980's and was found dead in front of the television on November 3rd, 2013.

Permanent Alterations, 2010-11

‘Permanent Alterations’ is a direct reflection of the liberated self in the temporal here and now, as expressed through the chance collaboration between my actions and the material environment. This installation began with an investigation of the studio space, uncovering the layers in the walls. Dust, rubble and broken pieces of wood become evocative traces of a series of actions. Dealing with the notion that art and everyday life are inseparable, traces of past works remain on the studio walls, just as past experiences remain in the unconscious.

The short term residency in the station has been a valuable experience, allowing me to create an artwork in an unusual space that had so much history. I chose to work with two rooms on the second floor which hold only memories and traces of actions, and I used the contents of these rooms to create the installation. The carpets hold traces from the happenings within those spaces, and I have used these to symbolise the past life of the room.

One of the main features that stood out at the Catalyst Arts new gallery space, was the maze of pipes and coloured electrical wires running along the ceiling and down the walls. I decided to use these as the starting point, which resulted in a labour intensive few days at the top of very high step ladders. Each strand of wool varies in length and is hung from one pipe to the second. None of these overlap if looking from the side.

An analysis of the structural and architectural elements of this gallery space lead me in the direction of creating this site specific installation. The form of this piece was inspired by the many surrounding windows. The multitude of lines replicates the movement and physicality of this piece and created different densities which conveyed the repetitive action. Up, Over and Down acts like an extension into the interior of the gallery space.
