Nefelibata

The work is part of an ongoing series of collages, made from various cut-outs of formerly discarded paintings, not unlike the temporary home(s) we keep leaving behind in search of a new one. They are an exercise in fragmentantion and recontextualisation, a testimony of all the in-between states and places we as migrants explore while looking to ultimately belong. Some things we keep with us forever, some we find the value of only after losing them, others we renounce knowingly; we fragment ourselves daily and reconstruct the puzzle that is us according to the imposed context, like emotional chameleons trying to fit in a box that's too small to being with.

Part of the series "Hiraeth", like most of the other works, this composite aims to describe an oddly specific state and emotional range, that seldom goes unnamed, without set terminology to have made its way into the vernacular of most languages, yet remains utterly relateable despite its specificity. Like the etymological exercise done by the author of the cited book in creating words to fit these emotions, the works are made out of constructed, deconstructed and reconstructed images, fragments and emotional states that ultimately reflect the longing for a place of one's own, somewhere to call home.

This experimental work explores the possibility of painting as a visual medium applied to three-dimensionality. Working with various materials, the artist sculpted an object that also functions as the work's "canvas".

The creative research behind the series focused on the quest for those immediate sensations and deep emotions related to childhood, as a period of intuitive knowledge, of intensive affects and exploration of the world primarily through the tactile and visual senses. At the border of reason, freedom meets its peak, stimulating the creation of a personal imaginarium and a painterly matteristic field with origins in the irrational. The ultimate goal was to pursue the former freedom and excitement of childhood through high-speed – each work being completed in under 10 minutes - small-scale paintings that work in favour of expressive forms and an intuitive approach to form and composition.
