The Gondring Residency in Woodworking at the Sawtooth School of Visual Arts aims to provide an emerging or established artist or craftsperson working in wood with access to tools, facilities, and an energetic craft school environment to encourage the development of new skills, interpersonal connections, and bodies of work.

The residency period runs for one year and includes a stipend of $3,000 to support the creation of a new body of work. Residents are chosen by the Director of Woodworking and a rotating jury. Selections are based on the quality of the work, its artistic merit, and the artist’s ability to bring new perspectives to our community.

Applicants should be enthusiastic and dedicated to their craft, enjoy working with others in a community studio setting. Previous experience working in a wood shop is strongly preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Residents will work 7 hours per week for the duration of the residency (January – December) in the studio on tasks that serve the function of the wood department. The resident will report to the department director. Work may include but is not limited to studio improvement projects, staffing open studio hours, material prep for classes and workshops, and tool and facilities maintenance.

TEACHING: Residents are encouraged to broaden their skills in craft through learning with discounted access to our classes and to share their skills and earn income through teaching.

Residents are asked to teach 2 or more beginner level evening workshops (“Taste of Art” Workshops) per quarterly session and are invited to propose other classes and workshops.

Residents will be paid regular instructor pay for any contracted instruction time and have access to any other applicable instructor benefits outlined in the instructor handbook.
