The Lost Picture CD of Slim Aarons. Joseph Ayerle Cycle (2016) Slim Aarons was an American photographer, a célèbre photographer and photographer of the celebrities. Slim Aarons died in 2006, one and a half year before the beginning of the big American financial and real estate crisis. This crisis started exactly where Aarons created some of his most iconic works: in the Villas, and at the swimming pools of Palm Springs. Joseph Ayerle created a cycle about the idea: What was, if Slim Aarons still made pictures in 2006? Perhaps we will find one day a Kodak CD full of the last pictures of Slim Aarons, images never intended for publishing. In the meantime we can enjoy Joseph Ayerles photo cycle. His wonderful pictures seem both erotic and earnest, comic and depressed. He is developing a distinctive Pop-Surrealist style, with a sense of the absurd, as well as respect regarding the oevre of Slim Aarons and the beauty of the desert town Palm Springs, the Amalfi coast and other places where Slim Aarons shooted his photos. text by Anne Wegner

A book, a photo, a memento: a stranger in a foreign country breaks through the isolation of the new place by placing something from his personal life nearby. But what if there was nothing? No picture, no book, no memento? Identity and memory are essential for our well-being. In addition to the known basic human needs, such as eating, drinking, sexuality and warmth, there are also less known needs, such as the need for identity. Anyone who has a working identity will not suspect that having an identity could be important. Identity is not what is described in the passport. If you lose a passport, you have not lost your identity. But what happens if you lose your identity?
In 2017 the artist Joseph Ayerle was invited to the Italian city of Florence as finalist and participant of the of the Concorso Nazionale di Arte Attuale and Biennal of the Academies of Firenze and Carrara. Ayerle continued to work in Italy, and his 2018/2019 cycle PARATEMPOREALIS was strongly influenced by the omnipresence of Renaissance art and Barock art in the streets of Firenze, Bologna, Milano and Bergamo. And during the project Ayerle returned to the Renaissance city of Poznan, where ancestors of him once lived. The project PARATEMPOREALIS is an approach to explore very personal and biographical facets, but once again the theme of the loss of identity, explored by time-travels, stayed in the focus of the artist. Contrary to expectations after his multi-awarded glitch-electronic projects “Un’emozione per sempre 2.0” and “The Art of Surviving One Day on Planet Earth” the cycle PARATEMPOREALIS takes up the visual language of Renaissance paintings, but once again the artist distorts in his project the coordinates of time, space and conventions in order to create its very own scope. .

Joseph Ayerle's art project depicts the invasion of a superior military power in Europe through a series of lens-based photographs shot in Gdansk (Poland) and Milan and Bergamo (Italy) in 2017\. The photos look like captured via surveillance cameras, provide a haunting insight into the invasion, with the use of digital tools and glitch techniques giving them an eerie, artifact-like appearance. The artist captures the silent and surreal nature of war for civilians, with conveying the fear and uncertainty of the people under attack. Joseph Ayerle’s avant-garde approach to digital art, combined with the use of photography, creates a visual impact that is both moving and thought-provoking. The projected started with lens-based works and ended up 2020 with surreal striking pictures and with an awarded video art, which was excepted for instance by the curators of the California Museum of Photography and the University of California Riverside for the exhibition [Audiovisual Frontiers](https://audiovisualmusic.ucr.edu/audiovisual-frontiers-all/the-purple-prophecy/) (2021), as well for the [IN OUT Festival](https://kultura.trojmiasto.pl/15-In-Out-Festival-2022-imp528513.html) of the CSW Laznia Contemporary Art Museum in Gdansk (2022). The title of the video art is “Surviving the Purple Prophecy”, the title of the photographic cycle is “The Art of Surviving one Day on Planet Earth in 2017”. Videoart: Surviving The Purple Prophecy

What was the idea of the cycle “Un'emozione per sempre 2.0” ? Movies have always been a great source of inspiration for artists. Today we see that the classic European cinematography disappeared. Who was the most iconic figure of the European cinema? For Joseph Ayerle it was without doubt the Italian actress Ornella Muti.  Today’s youngsters are followers of Kendall Jenner. But what, if Ornella Muti was young again? What, if she could time-travel from 1978 into the world of today, the world of Instagram, Youtubers and Influencers? Is there a kind of eternal beauty? Which role plays the style? Which role plays media made hype? What about time-related roles and generational identity? This thoughts were explored by a series of artworks, all about the question: What, if the Ornella would appear in our time? For Joseph, time travels are possible.

The genesis of the project idea lead to the a version with an AI-generated version of Ornella Muti. With the help of this AI-cast, the time travel became reality: “Un’emozione per sempre 2.0”, which was reviewed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for the study „Collective Wisdom“, became the world’s first movie with an AI-born actress. The new technology appeared exactly at the time, when it was needed. At the exhibition of the “Concorso Nazionale di Arte Attuale” a video without AI was shown. Some weeks later Joseph published a new version, with an AI-born Ornella Muti.

2017: Cycle "Un'emozione per sempre 2.0"

[DanceCubesII](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt26998032/) is a videoart piece that combines algorithm-based images of 80’s filmstar Ornella Muti, created by the selfcoded software Code9, and a half-visible dance performance of a young Italian actress from a Spanish B movie published in 1974\. The resulting artwork showcases an unseen visual language, with radical colors and unusual aesthetics. Ayerle's main idea was the human part of the piece. The co-creation software added a layer of unpredictability and chance to the work. The combination of the two image streams creates a unique and surreal viewing experience.

This photo cycle is not a wake-up call or a call to rebellion: it confronts us with our own complicity this downfall. The first version of this photo cycle was published in 2017\. After the reaction of the public Joseph understood, that his idea must be transformed into more radical pictures, and he created the new version of the cycle with the pictures you see today.
