pilote:pilote- is pilote´s first pop-up exhibition and its introduction to the Berlin´s art scene.
Pilote was established as an online producers gallery in the summer of 2016. The team consists of 9 independent artists of international origin represented and curated by Berlin based art historian Monique Wysterski. Pilote will now be presenting pop-up exhibitions on a regular basis. These will temporarily occupy different spaces, as they have no explicit gallery location. Pilote presents contemporary art of all media, specifically conceptual art and interdisciplinary works.
All 9 artist’s practices revolve around creating conceptual works by using interdisciplinary methods. They explore and develop new trends of artistic aesthetics and ways of exhibiting the works.
In the group show pilote:pilote show 80 works will occupy a 1.000 m² space, located in a building complex of the SEZ (a former recreational center in the GDR) in Berlin-Friedrichshain reviving it as an art space. The works shown depict a unique and impressive diversity of contemporary art forms, some of which include Fine Art Photography, Post Media Art, Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, Film and Video installation.
At first glance, the strong appearing heterogeneity of the shown positions opens not only interesting discourses about the arts, but also finds its harmony within the exhibition’s interpretational concept. The media spectrum of the art works shown and the artist’s incongruent approaches of contents visualize the current occupation with the contexts about reality and truth, nature and science. They display latest perceptions and tendencies within contemporary art and let the audience feel them.
With Sarah Strassmann (*1980), Kathrin Ganser (*1977), Valentina Torrado (*1981) and Theresa Schubert (*1980) pilote introduces four graduates with PhD or Phd candidacy from the renowned Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Germany.
Strassmann and Ganser connect a strong interest in architectural spaces and surfaces through the medium of frontal photography to emphasize their characteristics. With their unique image and media aesthetic both, analyze different locations and objects by referring to the accuracy of documentary photography. As every other artist in pilote they work serially.
That noticeable conceptual approach is also clearly visible in the work of Theresa Schubert, but in an otherwise indentified way. Based on biological experiments the post-media artist explores the coincidences and the unpredictability of nature since 2011. The results and new developed concepts found in these processes are presented in her artistic practice, which combines audiovisual and hybrid media to conceptual and immersive installations or work on paper. She researches in the intersection of art and science.
Valentina Torrado’s art is an “extension of her body“. The Uruguay native lives and works in Germany since 1998. She never lost her love for her home country and especially the ocean. Ever since and displays her close relation to her origin. The artist’s confrontation with the element water as compensation for the absent ocean is omnipresent in Torrados major work. Her large-scale mostly monochrome or neon shade paintings or drawings demonstrate her desire in an impressive manner.
Cécile Dupaquier (*1970) and Attiilo Tono (*1976) present their artistic approaches through drawings and mainly sculptures. The French and Italian artist both developed specific techniques for her preferred materials to visualize artistic essences. Cécile Dupaquier transforms usual materials from DIY stores like for example kappa-board and pursues the principle of the fold by cutting, folding and bending. The straight objects seem to reach a condition of physicality and end up as concrete installations of Minimal Art. Dupaquier’s artistic practice is located between architecture and sculpture but indicates her considerable affinity and passion for painting.
The latest works of visual artist Attilio Tono focus on traditional sculpture material like marble and plaster. Referring to the oblivious connection between object and surface he uses the natural characteristics of nature’s raw materials. In his installations, the artist brings them to a symbiosis with another product of nature: red wine. An ongoing visual transformation is a distinctive mark in Tono’s work. He also plays between the medium of drawing and sculpture, trying to find a balance, a limit, even a fusion of both.
Daniela Zeilinger (*1976) brings photography and painting in a complex and multimedia dialogue. Located in the artistic field of new media she constructs settings for her photographs by referring to abstract art, especially abstract painting. Zeilinger’s complex work processes include multiple techniques and media, such as analogue large-format camera, watercolor painting, collage and cut out. It is through the large-scale prints sensual effects that they assume an important role in her main work.
Selket Chlupka (*1981) and Betty Böhm (*1979) graduated at Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart, Germany.
In her installation combining video and objects, Betty Böhm processes her fascination for spaces with a particular history. The human being between the poles of territorial characteristics and effects that ordinary and artistically situations may cause on a psychological aspect is the recurring topic in Böhm’s mostly autobiographical works. She searches for and creates distinctive settings through her multidisciplinary practice of video, installation, performance, and photography. She provides the spectator with space for his own perception and imagination.
Selket Chlupka is a young artist who works mostly site-specific. Through collage, photography and large installations she displays subconscious mindsets and dreams, which are often deeply rooted in the artist’s involvement with her own self. The inclusion of Chlupka’s personal awareness of her direct environment and within her artistic work is consequently transformed into the process. It helps the artist to reach the sophisticated self-established goal to create visual realities.
