About ART BASEL MIAMI WEEK
Spectrum Miami and RedDot Miami will celebrate Art Basel Miami Week in Wynwood Arts & Design District, with both fairs now located inside the Mana Wynwood Convention Center, offering the only “two shows under one roof” from December 4—8, 2019. Both shows covers more than 100,000 square feet of indoor exhibition space that showcase the thriving art landscape, focused on the curatorial theme „Ignite and Passion".
About her concept the curator and Hamburg (Germany) based art historian Dr. Barbara Aust-Wegemund explains: „when we think of art exhibitions we often imagine painted artworks. But in the age of experiential contemporary art the sudden spring of technology allows new art concepts to expand into even more mediums of expression, to build bridges, passages of passion between painting, photography, (3-d) design, video, virtual reality. As we are working in long terms with our artists together, it is a pleasure to realize how they formally, materially, and conceptually further the visual vocabulary they had pioneered the last years.“
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
TRACY L. BARWICK
Tracy L. Barwick’s works, made of seed beads, are dealing with African culture, pattern and symbols, but much more she is interested in what constitutes and underpins each individual’s sense of belonging and (female) identity. Tracy L. Barwick was born in Ohio and currently lives in Maryland/DC. The visual artist is member of Maryland Arts Council and exhibited in NYC, Washington, Miami.
Khalilah Birdsong is a visual artist born in Cleveland/ Ohio with a studio practise based in Atlanta/Georgia. Her multilayered abstract paintings, recently shown at The 12th Florence Biennale for Art+Design Italy, are characterized by a liason of beauty, structure, tension and flow, celebrating the human life. Birdsong's work is held in corporate and public collections and the U.S. President Bararck Obama's collection, Presidental Library.
Wioletta Gancarz’s distinctive abstract paintings deviate from the emphasis on expressive and dynamic brushstrokes and candy- color qualities to create her own artistic path. In Miami she presents her dyptichon "Between Butterflies". The emerging visual artist with Polish roots, currently living in Switzerland, is also engaged in creating Interior Design solutions.
Barbara DeBord is a Florida-based photography artist, focused on exploring the elements of life in water. “Having grown up in the majestic mountains of Virginia, nature is deep in my blood,” Barbara explains. She sees the practice of photography as a way to connect to nature, a higher power, herself, and ultimately to those who view her images. “Art has the power to give us a common ground,” she states, “and I like being a part of that.” Her new series “Shadow Lights” explores how darkness and light exist side by side in nature and how we can find beauty in that balance. https://www.sanctuaryist.com/
Like a contemporary archaeologist Carole Kohler incorporates visual symbols and found objects (kelp from the ocean) into her new series „Nordic Feeling“ (blue cover image "Tide"). Influenced by the nordic landscape, her artist residency in Denmark/ Kirsten Kjaer Museum, she transcends her imaginations via augmented reality. Carole Kohler, who is known for her groundbreaking strategies and global art projects, is living and working in Switzerland.
The paintings by Claudia Mini invite us to escape from reality in a paradise garden. The Swiss artist and traveller has been inspired by the botanical gardens in Asia. She recently exhibited in Singapore during Singapore Arts Month at Shangri-La. Her artistic practice highlights unresolved problems ironically, taking elements from both modern and contemporary visual languages.
