Endecameron20 Digital Edition, with the artistic direction of video artist and performer Francesca Fini, is a virtual art residency project in a real location in Italy.
The location is the wonderful Rocca Sinibalda Castle, a millennial monument located near Rieti, in Lazio District. It is a very rare example of zoomorphic construction in Europe, as apparently its plan would have been inspired by the shape of a scorpion.
The Castle has a long history linked to the hospitality of intellectuals and artists (from Peggy Guggenheim to Gregory Corso, from Ezra Pound to Judith Malina), and for some years the owners, collectors, and patrons have inaugurated the Endecameron art residency project, in whose 2018 edition Francesca Fini took part as a performer.
The name of the residency itself is inspired by Boccaccio's Decameron, telling the story of a group of young friends who shut themselves in a villa outside Florence in the attempt to escape the plague of 1348, spending time telling each other exciting stories. This all-Italian novel merges with the more modern Edgar Allan Poe's Mask of Red Death, with the juicy metaphor of the aristocracy locking itself inside the castle to try to keep out the Evil, which however is already inside. A theme of disconcerting topicality
Today Endecameron, in the impossibility of hosting the summer residency, due to social distancing, has decided to transform emergency into an opportunity, experimenting with the format of the digital residency. A solution that will support the traditional residency project in the future.
The residency will take place from 17 to 26 July. The general topic of the event will be the castle itself, its rooms, the frescoes of the metamorphosis, the art collections, the tribal masks, and the characters, to be considered pretexts for free creative associations. In short, the idea is to transform a historical monument into a digital entity, inhabited not by old ghosts, but by ultra-contemporary virtual manifestations, ephemeral presences emerging from the network, animating the empty rooms, crossing the old walls, transforming the structure.
For this purpose art director Francesca Fini will design an ideal replica of the physical essence of the Castle, which will come to life in a web platform that will collect all the interventions, the art, the materials produced, and the live networked meetings of the artists with the audience. The works of each participant artist, whatever their format and nature, will be symbolically placed inside the virtual rooms of the Castle, but also in the physical ones, through projections, sound installations, QR Code, and Augmented Reality. The residence will close with a big final virtual event.
