Auf Sand gebaut -
“Built on sand” is a german proverb describing a situation that is unstable, lacking foundations, fleeting, volatile, ephemeral.
Coming from a country that according to the folklore, emerged entirely from desert sands, Yomdin examines how identity and multiculturalism develop and change along with time and following an immigration: When everything is build on sand, when everything is constantly changing, what is there to hold on to, to capture, to keep?
This narrative connects the different pieces, which at first might seem random, but are all characterized by the constant feeling of transience. This spiral around “constant transience” is expressed through a serie of different intermediate and fragile states which formulate the chronology of the artist’s relocation to berlin.
Avital Yomdin is an Israeli artist based in Berlin. After studying theater design in Tel Aviv, she focused on street art as an option to explore the relation between location and spectator, making use of public spaces to have a close look on the experiences that this relationship can ignite.
