Russell Banx’s Applied Academics is an examination of object obsolescence as we move further into the digital epoch. In this age of information and rapidly evolving technology, he confronts his extensive relationship with the printed word, academia, and its evolution into the digital medium. The abundance of books often given away or discarded provide Russell an analog medium rife with nostalgia that would otherwise be consigned to oblivion. The faded colouring and varied textures, repurposed and reframed, allow him to interact with the intimidating words and ideas of his formative years. With Applied Academics, light is shed on the ability of obsolete or forgotten objects to be redefined and evolve in parallel with their digital counterparts, and moreover come to terms with his personal insecurities concerning reading and education in their traditional forms. Russell Banx is a Canadian born artist based in Toronto, Ontario, currently living in Leipzig.
