Post-Internet conditons and their effect on contemporary ideas of representation in painting.

 

 

South African based painter Callan Grecia previews his MFA solo exhibition “These Aesthetics Are Not New”, as documented by Nigel Mullins. A watershed moment for contemporary painting in South Africa, the exhibition showcased a selection of paintings, t-shirts, installed elements and an immersive sound piece. The show was livestreamed on the artist’s Instagram for those who were not able to attend. Through this exhibition, Grecia aims to tackle contemporary ideas of representation and art making practices in an age of instantaneous access and technological immersion. “These Aesthetics Are Not New” draws inspiration from the effect of digital technological progress on a consumer society. The Internet as a source of ubiquitous imagery reaffirms the idea that in a Post-Internet age there is nothing new, only conditions affected by a networked way of life. . The exhibition speaks towards how the artist’s grasp of painterly knowledge and lexicon are then used to replicate digital conditions in the real world to cement his position that contemporary aesthetics, (digital, physical or both) are not new.
