In November 2019, Vermillion Trio performed at This Side Up! in Green Square Library in Sydney.  For approx. an hour and a half, the trio, consisting of tenor sax, double bass, and piano, performed in a darkened, almost pitch black room, with the only light produced from two projectors crossing over each other and showing images that related to nostalgic memories for the group. Various objects, consisting of both musical instruments and not, were strewn about for the audience to come in and play in whatever way they wished. The trio, then, had to improvise around the audience and respond to their playings, as well as each other, presenting an uncharacteristic relationship between the musicians and the audience.  Hence, the project's dynamic between the ensemble and the darkened, faceless audience (who were allowed to filter in and out of the room as desired) was both unique and highly successful, with a consistent stream of people coming in and out - often with up to 50 people in the room at once.

The performance was chaotic and soothing, and having to juggle a collaboration/correspondence with both the audience and each other's instruments was a challenge, albeit an effective one. In future, the group hopes to continue to present major audio works which challenge the traditional view of the audience as separate to the art, and instead actively engage the audience as an artist in their own right.
