Kim Byung Chul came all the way from Korea to exhibit at coGalleries next door. Everyday, I noticed his almost impossible attempt to connect with people. Language can build the biggest wall.

One day, I accepted his invitation for a coffee at the corner café. I tried to listen closely as he spoke. And I tried to speak slowly so he could understand me better. I admit, without 'voice translator' we would have failed.

He spoke about his work, his vision of the world, the chaos in which we live in, and how we have been stripped from our humanity, how we are incomplete.

As part of his show, he developed the “Human” text. A kind of abstract interactive poem generated by visitors. It defined in simple, but profound words what it means to be Homo Sapiens.

For my show, I have built a restricting metal structure, a '3D wall' that inhibits people from going to the 'other side'. And like all walls, my wall was build to be written on, painted on, and eventually, destroyed in order to transcend social and cultural barriers.

I wished to invite other artists to contribute to this process of transformation with their own work.

I had the pleasure to start this process with 김병철 (Kim Byung Chul).

We transcended cultural, language, and artistic barriers as we engaged in a common human experience.
