In 2015 I moved to Berlin to reconnect with my body. After ten years of long work-hours in New York, a Ph.D. in mathematics spent too much in my head, and a car accident, I felt disjointed and disconnected. The drawings in this project represent a first big step in the ongoing process of reconnecting and re-merging my mind and my body, and of understanding what my body means to me.
These drawings began as an exercise in asking the body how it itself might want to be healed. Putting aside the notion that painting pain could help diffuse it (it had not worked), I adopted the opposite approach and began drawing ideas of how to give the pain, and my body, a hug, so to speak. Originally intended as a side exercise, I now recognize these pieces as an important first step in an ongoing process. The body awareness paintings, Part 2 on this theme, were completed about a half a year later. (Note: this work is not a statement about extreme pain, but rather an exploration into resolving the low-level pain and confusion ever present in the body.)
