"In collaboration with The Illuminator, Brazilian born artist Mariana Amaral explores her own personal perceptions of the European Union through a series of work. She talks us through each piece, revealing an insight into the way in which inspiration is drawn from the political sphere."

Personal statement about the work:  While squares and cubes are useful, an obsession with such things must have something Freudian about it. While the fetishism has its uses to achieve a pleasurable end for some people, for others, it’s quite uncomfortable. Generally, when you have so many partners, you try to have a pleasurable situation for all included, or you just don’t stage the situation at all. Too bad the EU doesn’t have a ‘safe word’.

“One must fit to be part” portrays the uncomfortable feeling that comes from the necessity of fitting into a box, an idea, a concept, a shape or, if one may say, an economic and political union.
