“In collaboration with The Illuminator, Brazilian born artist Mariana Amaral explores her own personal perceptions of the European Union through a series of work. She talks us through each piece, revealing an insight into the way in which inspiration is drawn from the political sphere.”

Personal statement about the work: Like an arranged marriage, destined to be tied together from the first days of the French and German cooperation in the European community, they put forward the facade of a conventional partnership. The pants, the dress, with a strong, authoritative father to lead them and with a mother – whose feet don’t seem to stay on the ground – to console the children and to keep up appearances for the other nations… Of course, since children are not mature enough to decide their lives for themselves, the parents are needed to keep them from mistakes.
And, when the children make yet another mistake, like good parents, these two leaders of the house take away their children’s autonomy in order to, ‘do right by the children’. Spare the rod, spoil the child.

“For the sake of the family” is a satire about the EU family, where the political ‘marriage’ between the representatives of France and Germany for the sake of others is given a literal meaning.
