Our small team has been working hard to bring the Berlin Art Prize 2014 into realisation. In just one year we’ve grown a lot, with over 1,200 Berlin-based artists applying for the prize in this year. As a team of enthusiastic volunteers, we are continually seeking financial backing for the Berlin Art Prize and for this reason we have decided to start a crowd funding campaign with StartNext. The Berlin Art Prize represents a converse standpoint to traditional art prizes. It is the only art prize in Berlin, and one of the only in the world, that evaluates applicant’s work based purely on artistic merit. The prize is open to every artist residing in Berlin, charges no application fee, and has a diverse program of events free of charge to attend. In order to achieve this we rely on a network of unpaid volunteers, but we strive to support the musicians, academics, artists, and performers that participate in the Berlin Art Prize through modest financial remuneration. Through these means, we are attempting to change the conditions through which art and creatives are assessed. 

You may be thinking: “But I don’t live in Berlin.” or “Why would I support the Berlin Art Prize?” The answer is simple – the Berlin Art Prize offers support to far more than just Berlin-based artists. While the applicants, essayists, and lecturers live here, they come from all over the world. Current and past participants are from the U.S.A., Great Britain, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Scotland, Ireland, Lithuania, and Japan. We created the prize knowing that the artists may or may not remain in Berlin, but the title of Berlin Art Prize Nominee is something they can proudly use for the promotion of their own work wherever they go. Support for the Berlin Art Prize is support for the arts internationally. 

Your donation goes directly towards the production of the exhibition, the residency for the three winning artists, the creation of a catalog in German and English with essays by René Pollesch, Felicia Zeller, Kimberly Bradley, and Eva Wilson, a lecture series with internationally relevant topics in contemporary art, such as gender in the arts and how to create an outstanding portfolio and successfully apply for funding, and the maintenance of our database, which is used to support the artists throughout the year.
