Black soil is a symbol of fertility and abundance. Though it is very important to treat it with great circumspection, having under your feet a lifegiving but very unstable substance that strives to absorb anybody who dares to deal with it in too direct and straighforward way. Nevertheless, the natural annual cycle implies a period when the ground starts working by different laws and everything that owes its existence to the soil gets subjected to these laws. The external processes of life stop their flow providing the internal ones with several months of cold peace and giving a chance of rest and reinterpretation to everything that is capable of philosophizing and reflection. And since all the objects and creatures of high-latitude winter have this capability, nobody and nothing stays aside. Moreover, for many of them the presence of such a period of stillness is vital.
“In winter the chernozyom is in special need of care” - says an artist Semyon Zemko.
This authentic author from a village Mamonchishche (Voronezh region) was who took on the role of the initiator and supervisor of the celebration in honor of the frozen Chernozyom's day.
Here we publish the story of the main organizer and curator of the event Semyon Zemko:
"In the late autumn I came from my native village Mamonchishche, to the region's center to agree on my participation in the celebration of the Frozen Chernozyom's day. I visited all the institutions related to cultural policy, where I tried to know the program of events devoted to the holiday. However, none of them could give me any information about it. Desperate, I decided to write a note to one of the city's main newspapers, where I wanted to draw people's attention to the necessity of the frozen chernozyom's day celebration with the scale it surely deserves. After some time, unfortunately for me, I found out that in the building in Prospect Revolutsii, where I brought the note there have been no publishing house and no typography for a very long time.
Leaving the building I met a group of people who introduced themselves as young experimental artists and I outpoured to them all the indignation I had. I told them how people of my native village celebrated this holiday. I told them about chernozyom-men who at a certain moment stripped to the waist, climbed a tree of a special shape and jumped down hitting the ground with their bellies. Having made sure of that the soil was frozen and didn't stick to them anymore they joyfully ran around the village and performed incredible art-like actions.
Apparently, my stories inspired the group of experimental artists, so I offered them to cooperate with me on the holiday's celebration. After several meetings we decided to organize a series of art events devoted to the frozen chernozyom's day in the whole length of Prospect Revolutsii — the central street of the capital of Chernozemye, on 23rd of December."
