Launched in 2004, Gstaadfilm is a festival for short films made by visual artists. It was established to give an opportunity to visual artists working in film to enter into a festival.
The festival first ran in Gstaad, in the Swiss Alps, in 2004. In 2015 the organisers decided to 'move mountains', bringing the festival on tour. It was staged on a Celtic tour to Ireland, Wales and Scotland, with a final screening in Sweden in 2016. The award ceremony was held in Dublin in November 2015. In 2017 the festival will take place in Montevideo, Uruguay.
Dependant upon the length of films received, a maximum of twenty-five can be taken into the official program of the festival. Five of them will be nominated and admitted to the competition for the Gstaad Film Award. This award is to be The Golden Cow of Gstaad. The prize money is set to CHF 400.- (Swiss Francs) and an invitation to Gstaad, Switzerland.
In 2015 there was a NEW PRIZE awarded to an emerging artist/filmmaker under the age of twenty five; The Golden Calf of Gstaad. A prize of CHF 100.- (Swiss Francs) will be awarded to the winner.
All of The Golden Cow awards are hand-carved by a local dairy farmer Walo Perreten, who has his farm in an area quite close to Gstaad.
