BUTOH WORKSHOP with AYA IRIZUKI
23 - 25 September 2016 in Munich, Germany
The workshop is open to all levels, amateurs and professionals, prior Butoh experience is not necessary.
Known to a wide publik for her main female role of a Butoh dancer in the film "Kirschblüten-Hanami“ (Cherry Blossoms, 2008) and this year award-winning "Fukushima, Mon Amour" (original title: Grüße aus Fukushima, 2016), both directed by Doris Dörrie, Aya Irizuki is also recognized as a distinctive dancer and personality developing her own way on the border of Butoh, corporeal mime and physical theatre.
However her basement in Butoh is profound and strong.
From her childhood she studied classical and modern ballet, but turned to Butoh at the age of 18. She visited Asbestos Hall and took classes from Akiko Motofuji, a partner and widow of Tatsumi Hijikata, who carefully inducted her into Butoh.
"Akiko Motofuji... she was my teacher until the day of her death (2003). Even though I was too young to understand Butoh, Ms. Akiko accepted to teach me and gave me many opportunities to attend her productions which was very exciting. Mainly I joined her performances it Tokyo, but also travelled with her for shows in Japan".

Later her teachers were Yukio Waguri and Koichi Tamano. She also worked as a dancer in their Butoh Dance Companies performing in Japan and touring over the world until recently. Nowadays she develops herself as a solo dancer and an actress.
Having graduated from Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music,
she makes mainly herself costumes and stage design for her performances.
The workshop contains warming up, technique, improvisation and a short choreography.
