Larnaca Biennale had its first edition in 2018. With more than 18000 visitors at the main exhibition and more than 4000 spectators attending the parallel events, Larnaca Biennale is the biggest and most popular arts event in Cyprus!
Next edition will take place between October–November 2020. In addition to the main exhibition, the Biennial will host a series of artistic and culture events in the city such as concerts, theater, performances, lectures etc.
If you’re an artist or a photographer, join us for the competition. If you are an art lover join us to experience the Biennale Larnaca 2020. Welcome to the beautiful city of Larnaca!
Larnaca Biennale 2020 grapples with limits.
That which is definable inevitably grapples with the question of limits. What is really there is in essence the area it takes up, either tangible or intangible, real or imaginary. Limits change, expand, shift; but they cannot be annulled because then what they define would be annulled too.
In this paradoxical age of utter deconstruction, of a single globalized society, of a single device, a single social model, such notion could sound provocative, perhaps because we often confuse challenging limits with challenging their very existence. The first could be the definition of freedom, the second is a rather superficial version of it. To claim that there are no limits is equivalent to shouting at the top of your lungs to someone standing right in front of you: “To me you do not exist!” But to address someone means to acknowledge they exist.
Creative thinking has always trodden along the border but also, quite often, beyond the limits. The scientist whose vision took him outside the limits of his era; the poet in quest of the impossible; the artist defending to death the unproven – they do not fight to abolish limits; they fight to change them. For humanity, this is the fulcrum of progress.
Are there spaces that do not negotiate their limits? Are there limits in nature or is this a socially constructed notion? Can something exist beyond limits forever or merely for some time? And if yes, at what cost?
In the end, are there any limits?
There are, but they are limitless.
Due to the ongoing uncertainty for global health and following the advice and guidelines from national and international health authorities, we have decided that it will be not realistic, nor responsible to proceed with the second edition of Larnaca Biennale: ''Limitless Limits'', in 2020.
The well-being, health and safety of our artists, associates and visitors remains our highest priority. At this point it is also evident that restrictions and uncertainty on travel and transport will greatly affect participating artists and visitors from abroad.
The current situation affects direct contact with artists, the organization of parallel events and restricts public interaction, - all of which are key elements to the success and quality of Larnaca Biennale.
It is for these reasons that we have taken the decision to postpone the 2nd edition of Larnaca Biennale, until next year and at the same time extend the open call for artists until March 31st 2021.
All artist applications received for Larnaca Biennale 2020 are valid for Larnaca Biennale 2020-21 and all artists will be informed on the final selection of the committee during the second week of May 2021.
We look forward to welcome you to Larnaca Biennale 2020-21, 13 October - 26 November 2021 !
We remain at your disposal for any information and assistance.
