Based on Water
Water is the basis of life on earth. But, our way of life threatens our own existence. Melting glaciers and polluted waters urge us to rethink how we live. “Based on Water” shows glacier images by Chinese artist Jin Ping and photographs of ice and water by German artist Charlotte Sonntag.
Jin Ping prints cyanotypes of glaciers on glass and silk. With its typical “Berlin blue”, this old photographic printing process highlights the beauty of the glaciers on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau which are increasingly threatened by global warming.
Charlotte Sonntag’s macro photographs of ice and water contrast the states of congelation and fluxion. Fascinated by the multifaceted structures of water, she moves between macro photography and impressionistic scenes.
The exhibition opens on 16 May in the presence of the artists at Direktorenhaus Berlin. In Summer 2015 it will be on view at the Inter Art Center and Gallery at 798 Art District/Dashanzi in Beijing.
