Magic Beans is pleased to present "Ansammlungen", a solo exhibition by Frederike von Cranach from May 13 to June 10, 2016.
"Ansammlungen" is Frederike von Cranach's first solo exhibition at Magic Beans. This exhibition will feature new sculptures, works on paper and mixed media collages.
The exhibition is structured around five sculptures made up of Egagropili, straw-like and furry natural objects found in the Mediterranean sea that arise from Neptune Grass. She finds inspiration and power form these fibrous spheres that wash up on to the shores. von Cranach stacks the stunning round objects and forms them into tall cubic structures by wrapping them with fine thread so that they appear to be otherworldly, science fiction monuments.
The Egagropili are the foliage produced from a plant called Posidonia Oceania, an important part of the ecosystem in the Mediterranean Sea. It provides a rhizomatic and stable seabed that regulates water current, is a source of oxygen and is one of the oldest living organisms. von Cranach poetically embraces the immense potential of these organisms in order to reach a deeper meaning within her personal relationships and for her self. They mark a tipping point for her, a shift in her importance on the external where she began to turn inward in her practice, slowing down and letting go.
The sculptures are complimented by abstract, minimal ink drawings, collage, and mixed media works. Meditations on Egagropili pervade every surface, connections are made with thin lines and small gestures. von Cranach has expanded her practice by creating large mixed media collages, with paper, canvas, acrylic, pen, and charcoal. These monochrome works create an environment from another universe, not the sea, not the earth, somewhere beyond, somewhere within.
The exhibition opens Friday, 13th and runs until June 10th, 2016. The gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday from 12 pm - 6 pm.
