International Conference and Festival
of Contemporary Character Design and Art
May 10 – 14, 2017
Babylon am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, ACUD MACHT NEU, Urban Spree and a series of exhibitions throughout Berlin-Mitte
The annual Pictoplasma Festival showcases the latest trends in character design and art, and in its 13th edition embraces full immersion. This year’s focus is on artists and designers exploring the role of character design within the aesthetic conventions of gaming, virtual, and augmented reality, testing the ability of their figurative creations to push genre boundaries and challenge our grasp on the real. The theme ’Character Upload’ reflects on an understanding of cultural production in the age of extreme viral circulation and 'Internet Everywhere’—once released, the characters act as autonomous agents, move freely across media and link themselves to other artifacts beyond control.
The festival features numerous exhibitions by many of the artists speaking at the central conference—most of them showing their work in Berlin for the first time. Peter Millard, Pooya Abbasian, Sophie Koko Gate and Eran Hilleli will take over the abandoned administrative building at the central St. Marien and St. Nikolai cemetery, with a display of watercolors, paintings, sculptures, drawings, sound, video and interactive installation; Louise Rosenkrands will present a series of brush drawings, ‘Girls,’ exploring the female body in a stylized form at Bold Room Berlin; VOLUME features the first exhibition of shooting star Jack Sachs, with sculpture, painting, animation, 3D modeling, while Paulina’s Friends presents ‘The Secret World of Stuff’—animist digital collages imposed on found objects by Sean Charmatz; DXTR celebrates ‘The 25th Hour’ and beauty of the night, for which he takes over a temporarily empty store at an architectural landmark, the residential house Auguststraße 26A; a few meters up the street at Kunsthaus KuLe, Mate Steinforth investigates the relationship between the body and the digital and presents his 3D rendered works in prints and video; a group show at the legendary Neurotitan showcases prints and rugs by Chris Haughton, ceramics by Nathalie Choux, prints by Rob Flowers and Samuel Boucher, and soft sculptures by Ton Mak. Berlin’s illustration legend, Henning Wagenbreth, presents his growing creative machine of wooden building blocks, 'Tobot Tower,’ at his gallery, Ministerium für Illustration. From here, the streetcar M10 will take you all the way to a group show at Urban Spree that features works by the Pictoplasma Academy Alumni 2016—with 24 artists from 18 countries.
